Women Leaders Program
September 3
2:00-4:00 PM
Our first Women Leaders features engineering and medicine! Mentors this week are Lizeth Medina Balliet, Senior Manager of Automated Production and Advanced Data Science from Neenah Foundry and Erin Eferem Emergency Medicine Physician from Thedacare. Mentees will create a foundry in a box by making molds and pouring molten iron and practice basic skills used in emergency medicine! Girls will learn what a day-in-the-life of an engineer and ER doctor look like, perform brain teasers, enjoy snacks from River Tyme Bistro and participate in small group discussions with our mentors. All attendees will take home a copy of the beautifully illustrated book “Women In Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed The World” by Rachel Ignotofsky.

Join research mentors from UW-Green Bay and Lawrence University for an outdoor learning experience! Women Leaders this week are Amy Carrozzino-Lyon (Restoration Scientist, UW-Green Bay) and Relena R. Ribbons (Assistant Professor of Geosciences, Lawrence University). Following brain-teaser warmups, attendees will participate in ornithology and botany activities along the Fox River while learning about a day-in-the-life of wildlife researchers. They will also hear what it’s like being an academic researcher and professor! Snacks from River Tyme Bistro are included along with small group discussions with our mentors. All girls will take home the beautifully illustrated coloring book “The Wondrous Workings of Science and Nature” by Rachel Ignotofsky.

The third week of our Women Leaders program features math and science together! Mentors Promise Tober (American Family Insurance), Natalie Kohtala (Baker Tilly) and Chris Martino (Thermo Fisher Scientific) bring us their experiences in actuarial science, accounting and clinic trial research. After brain teasers to start the day, attendees will learn all about what types of math are used in fascinating careers as well as the important steps of clinical research to bring the world new and useful medicines.
Girls will delve into the world of useful mathematics doing activities all about profits and pricing! They will then discover what it’s like to begin the process of discovering new drugs by doing a hands-on drug screening science activity! Snacks from River Tyme Bistro and small group discussions will wrap up the day. All girls who attend will go home with a I Love Science: A Journal for Self-Discovery and Big Ideas written and illustrated by Rachel Ignotofsky.

The final week of Women Leaders brings us technology and chemistry! Join web designer Alyssa Giese (Fortiris), data analyst Carolyn Challoner (Fox Valley Tech) and chemist Mary Glesner (Georgia Pacific) for a day of fascinating STEAM topics!
Brain teasers will start the program, followed by what a day-in-the-life looks like for each of these mentors. Girls will then be divided into groups to do a technology activity. The second activity will allow attendees to delve into a world of polymer chemistry! Girls can then enjoy snacks provided by River Tyme Bistro during small group discussions with the three Women Leaders of the day. Each girl will head home with an illustrated copy of the fascinating book “The History of the Computer” by Rachel Ignotofsky.
